Course Description
8th grade social studies will focus on early United States History from English colonization of North America to the Western American Indian Wars, roughly 1700-1890. This survey in United States History will cover a variety of topics essential to the formation of the United States and the history of our young nation. Historical content will include English colonization, the American Revolution, the Constitution, the early presidents, the Age of Jackson, Westward Expansion, 19th century reform movements and transformation, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Western American Indian Wars.
On a basic level, students will deepen their knowledge of the important people and events that shaped our early history. More importantly, students will be studying these topics along political, economic, social, cultural, and geographic themes. By studying content along these themes, students will look at our history in an engaging and critical way that provides an opportunity for a multi-faceted understanding of the accomplishments, struggles, and tragedies involved in our nation’s history.
