Thomas Jefferson's narrow victory in the election of 1800 ushered in what he, and many, would consider an era in which the United States would be re imagined. Between the defeat of John Adams and the Federalists and the death of Alexander Hamilton in 1804, Federalist influence in Washington was certainly on its way out. Therefore, the question of whether or not Jefferson could bend the development of the United States to his ideals while avoiding conflict with European powers remained. With the Louisiana Purchase I am sure that everyone can agree that this era was one of great change, and success. However, in what other ways did the presidencies of Jefferson and Madison shape the United States?
