Chapter 9
On a consistent basis, our current political system is marred by intense disagreements and the occasional personal attack. Many believe this is unique to today's political environment, surprisingly the 1790s had a similar feel to it. This decade, known for the presidencies of Washington and Adams, also saw the emergence of the modern financial system, the first political parties, the expansion of federal power, an angry farmer rebellion, foreign intrigue, and echoes of states' rights arguments. The intensity surrounding these events and arguments of the 1790s is clear, as are the connections between the this defining decade and today's political arena.
